1 Samuel 9 tells us that Israel's first king, Saul, was "an impressive young man without equal among the Israelites--a head taller than any of the others." Saul had skills. He was the biggest and the strongest. He was the giant of Israel.
When Saul was confronted with the giant of Philistia he saw that his strength and skill was not enough. Sadly, Saul, did not think of the strength of God.
David came along in his weakness (too young to be a part of the standing army) and he killed the giant. Yes, David had some serious sling-skills... but clearly this story highlights the difference between the skill of strong flesh, and the skill of a heart that trusts the LORD. David said, "The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine."
By his faith in the LORD to deliver, David became a champion of Israel against impossible odds. He foreshadows our ultimate champion, Jesus, the descendant of David who would defeat the ultimate giant, death.

In the past few weeks we have been noticing that some of those chosen by God to fulfill His will for His people, were perceived as unwilling (Moses reluctant to serve, Ex. 3:10-12) or undeserving (Gideon being from the "weakest" tribe, and the "least" in his family, Judges 6:15).
But now I'm noticing that, with Samson, Saul and David, we start to see that God's chosen people are becoming capable in the eyes of "secular" culture. Samson was physically dominant, as was Saul. And, as Pastor Dave said, David just had skills. Skills that encouraged Israelites to flock to serve with his army!
It's as if, earlier, in Exodus - Ruth, God built-up those who were chosen, but from Samuel-Chronicles, it seems He chooses naturally strong leaders, who along the course, fall to sin from their human nature. However, in the end, God is always with us fulfilling his plan.
These passages just remind me that no matter where my confidence level is, I can trust in the Lord. When I feel weak, He will lift me up. When I feel strong, so strong that maybe I think I can do it without God, I will no doubt fall.
~"He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered" (Proverbs 28:25,26).
great comment! This is the temptation to any man with skills or without skills. To leave God out of the equation.
